By far the BEST veggie burger I have ever had! Wine for under $4! I brought my fiance in after trying the burger at Homegrown and he was floored. The owner even came by to clear our table and talk to us about the reciepe. So good, I can't say enough wonderful things!

Re: “Chez Panisse

Been going here since the early '70s and it still THE dining experience in the East Bay. Others may burst brightly on the scene, but day in and day out this is still, after all these years, an established level of excellence that sets the standard for the rest. Always something new on the downstairs menu. Excellent wine list (a tad pricey), really good wait staff and a kitchen staff that is happy to give you a tour of the kitchen. Be sure to make your reservations a month in advance to avoid disappointment.

Re: “Ashkenaz

Ashkenaz rocks. Reviews about one band, that reflect on the whole club, are problematic. And just to remind- Ashkenaz rocks.

Re: “Ensarro Ethipoian Cusine

This is the freshest and most authentic Ethiopian food I have ever had in the entire Bay Area, and I have been an enthusiast since the mid 1990s. I have had several friends who I have taken that have been to various other Ethiopian Restaurants around the bay for years, and all agree this is the best. They continue to grow and expand, but quality has only improved. The one drawback is just how busy it is getting. I can't be jealous though, the world needs to have this great food!

Re: “Piedmont Fabric

Cool is right! Piedmont Fabric may not be the largest store, or the cheapest, but it IS the BEST Fabric store in the East Bay!

Lan carries a large selection of affordable quality fabrics that meet most every need, with style. Better yet, they know where everything is, and will help you find something 'just-right' for your project.

(What good is a large inventory if the staff can't or won't help you find what's right for you?! Who wants to deal with snooty attitudes, or hunt for hours on their own through a warehouse?!)

Often, I just go in, describe my project, and am directed to excellent fabrics that put a smile on my face, well within my budget! Lan's Piedmont Fabrics is the "Goldilocks" solution to fabric. Not too big. Not too small. Not too rich. Not too poor.

Lan, Josh, and Kirby know how to help find the 'just right' fabric for almost any project, and like the review says, share in your enthusiasm. They've got style and good taste, and will help you get what you need.

I've noticed also that they've added sewing classes with an award winning costume-designer/sewing teacher, Katy Simola ( These classes are small (4 students or less), creative, and inexpensive. There are classes for adults and kids, beginners and more experienced. Many classes are designed to help 'self-taught' or beginning sewing students take their skills to the next level. It's hard to find an environment that celebrates DIY creativity as much as this in the Bay Area. In this age of pre-fab mass production, these folks are rescuing the lost art of making one's own clothes/textiles!

I LOVE Piedmont Fabrics! It's not a secret anymore!

Re: “Sushi California

Sushi California also boasts some of the best fresh sushi in the East Bay. Thick cuts ensure that you get your money's worth.

Re: “East Bay Church of Religious Science

I first attended EBCRS under protest - just wanted to go out to brunch, but my brother suggested that we attend church first. That was two years ago and this place still feels like home. There is definitely something special happening on the corner of 41st and Telegraph! Come and see for yourself!

Re: “Green Faerie Farm

This is an amazing place. The respect and love that Mateo and Jim feel for the animals, plants, and land is palpable when you are in their presence. You are truly a lucky person if you get to meet these men or share in their bountiful harvest. Jim and Mateo you deserve the Best Urban Farm award! Congratulations!!!

Re: “Oggi

CDV has the best chocolate chip cookies I've had anywhere (and I'm pretty old)! May as well eat dessert first, but the main course food is terrific, too. There is a fabulous appetizer that has cognac-soaked apricots, cheeses, home-made bread, almonds, well, you get the idea. While the owner calls the plates "small," you can easily make a good meal, followed by a terrific dessert.

Re: “Walden Pond Books

Sure, they have a great politics and labor studies section, but I can't say enough great things about their science fiction and mystery sections. I guess that shows where MY tastes lie. Whenever I need a great fiction read, I head for Walden Pond. They must buy and sell an awful lot of used fiction because their used shelves constantly have books that weren't there the last time I checked. And I'm there every weekend.

They also seem to always have the exact NEW book I had just read about in the NY Times or the Chronicle. And when I've asked for a suggestion, I've been steered towards some of the most wonderful reads that I'd never heard about before. The people who work here LOVE books - and they know their books. THAT's what gets a book store 5 stars!
