Billy Martin is one of those hairstylists who has subsisted nicely purely on word of mouth. His studio is in his home, a cozy house above the Laurel District, surrounded by nature's crew cuts: cacti and other succulents. Plunk down into one of his vintage '50s chairs after work and let him take over. He won't admit to having any one specialty, but women and men with long hair swear by his skill. Long hair is actually pretty hard to make look right, and many stylists haven't mastered it. He has. He's also a master colorist. But the best things about Billy's House of Beauty (except the fact that it's called Billy's House of Beauty, but we'll overlook that) are its flexible hours, and the fact that he'll even do housecalls to your crib. That means that any time you want some sheer brilliance, he's game. Just don't back into a desert bloom as you blissfully scamper out with your new 'do.
