The Red Onion looks like a pretty unremarkable place on the surface. Located roughly across the street from the Home Depot in El Cerrito, the small shack that houses this joint is pretty easy to miss. Inside, it doesn't seem so special, either, with its standard diner decor, a few tables, and the skin-sticking aroma of grease. But the cooks here make a pretty good burger for a decent price. Four bucks will get you a fat cheeseburger, and a whole lotta fries will put you out a buck fifty. They keep things simple at the Red Onion -- there's no special sauce or fancy ingredients. What they do, which makes all the difference in any burger experience, is pay careful attention to the bun, which is toasted on the grill just so.
