Sometimes it's quantity, not quality, that matters. South Berkeley's venerable Irish-cum-Persian pub, the Starry Plough, has redefined the happy hour eightfold. Starting as early as an hour before noon, you can get the Plough's happy hour amenities: discounts on beer, pizza, cheeseburgers, and all sorts of deli fixins. Happy hour doesn't end till 7 in the evening, for a remarkable eight hours of cheap beer and munchies. And, of course, you can kill the better part of an hour staring at the old IRA, Sandinista, and Vietnam-era posters that hang, yellow and cracking, from the walls. At night, the live bands take over, and you're out the door if you can't pony up the cover charge. But as long as the sun is shining, you're in luck. Take a break from your busy workaday schedule and throw down a pitcher before the day's even half over; the gang at the Plough will be happy to accommodate you.
