10:30 a.m. Saturday: Best Old-School Knitting Store

Creative Accents

Knitting becoming the hot new hipster activity makes longtime knitter curmudgeons crabby because they're opposed to doing things that everyone else (not to mention Daryl Hannah) is doing. Knitting is a fun and geeky craft, a way to relax and also feel like you are accomplishing something while being sucked in by the latest TV reality dating show. But when groups of hipster knitters are meeting in bars for knitting circles and calling themselves "the Crafty Bitches" -- well, surely Great Aunt Enid must be spinning in her grave. Gail Tanquary, the owner of Creative Accents, doesn't share these prejudices, maybe because more knitters in the world is good for her. She'll cheerfully teach anyone to knit, offer advice on your latest project, and send you home with supplies to keep you knitting and purling for longer than any of those TV couples will stay together. Tucked into a residential neighborhood next to an old-fashioned ice-cream parlor, the store makes you feel like ol' Aunt Enid could come toddling in at any moment, looking for yarn to make toilet-paper cozies. The store has a good selection of needles and yarn, and just the right old-school feel.
