Online Account Executive Job Description

The East Bay Express is expanding its sales team to meet our continued growth and to help create new revenue-generating opportunities. This position will also act as the lead for online selling efforts of the entire sales team, and will be incentivized for both individual efforts as well as team performance. The primary focus will be selling online advertising on EastBayExpress.com, but there are many other ancillary web-based projects to help us monetize. Also, your creativity and new ideas for opportunities for online revenue will be essential to our longer-term goals.

The ideal candidate should have online sales experience and the ability to work with large and small clients with a wide range of internet and internet marketing skills. This position is expected to have some basic understanding of the general back-end processes and standard tools of online advertising, but is not expected to be a web developer. Furthermore, the candidate should possess mentoring, leadership and sound new business development skills with the ability to help our team develop and seize new opportunities in this niche area of our business.

General Job Duties

• Prospect and sell advertising for EastBayExpress.com, m.EastBayExpress.com, and e-mail newsletters with the goal of selling out existing inventory and enabling us to raise our rates.

• Seek out, develop, and maintain additional revenue-generating online opportunities, including partnerships and affiliate programs.

• Work with the sales department to ensure online advertising revenue goals are met or exceeded. Become conversant in Google Analytics to help sales force better understand and sell existing inventory.

• Work with internal departments, outside vendors, and online partners to ensure advertising campaigns are successfully implemented. Post online campaigns to the web site and maintain current records of available inventory for the sales team. Become primary in-house expert in operations of ad server software.

• Provide excellent customer service through accurate account billing, quality customer account maintenance, and timely response to customer needs.

• Prepare sales and prospect reports for sales management as directed.

• Communicate with web department when additional functionality is desired for our online or mobile efforts.

• Communicate to management as online inventory approaches sold-out status and additional traffic needs to be generated.

• Potentially prospect and sell advertising for affiliate online, e-mail, and mobile sites.

Interested candidates should submit their cover letter and resume (both are required) by emailing: Jody [dot] Colley [at] EastBayExpress.com

Editorial Reporting Internships

The East Bay Express accepts editorial reporting interns for the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Interns will report and write stories of their own initiative, working about 20 hours per week at our Oakland office. Previous reporting experience is helpful, as is understanding the difference between magazine-style writing and the hurried fact-finding of daily papers. Interns don't do busywork, compile listings, go for coffee, or complete "research" for more experienced writers. Instead, they work with an experienced editor to learn the basics of long-form news and feature writing. Knowledge of the East Bay and foreign language skills are a plus. We strongly encourage women and minorities to apply. Internships are unpaid; students must be able to receive school credit.

Please send a cover letter and résumé via e-mail to: Nate Seltenrich, Editorial Coordinator, Nate [dot] Seltenrich [at] EastBayExpress [dot] com or mail to East Bay Express, 620 3rd St., Oakland, CA 94607.

DEADLINE FOR SPRING INTERNSHIP: November 15.
DEADLINE FOR SUMMER INTERNSHIP: March 15.
DEADLINE FOR FALL INTERNSHIP: August 1.

Editorial Internship

The East Bay Express accepts editorial interns for the fall, spring, and summer semesters. This is an opportunity for aspiring journalists or those curious about working in a newsroom to gain hands-on experience in the day-to-day operations of a weekly newspaper, with the opportunity to contribute editorial content.

Interns will assist the editorial department with a variety of clerical and administrative tasks, including but not limited to entering listings in our entertainment calendar; fielding mail, email, and phone calls; and processing letters to the editor. In addition, the intern will write short items in our special issues, calendar section, and on our blog. Interns who show initiative and writing skills are also welcomed to pitch longer stories to our news or music sections. Strong organization, typing, and computer skills are a must, as are an interest in journalism and familiarity with the East Bay. Interns are expected to be in the office about 20 hours a week, and must attend weekly department editorial meetings.
