Re: “Calavera

A great Uptown venue! The bar offerings, especially mezcal & tequila, are intruiging. And the food, based on their Oaxacan theme, is tasty and creative. Well worth a visit! Beautiful decor and superb food presentation. Wait staff is friendly and attentive.

Re: “1300 on Fillmore

we took a group of 12 to 1300 on Fillmore and were very disappointed. We had a set menu planned for the group but were served a completely different menu. Service was slow and quite sloppy, food was just ok. Lastly the atmosphere was poor, music was much too loud.

Re: “Oaklanders: Next Police Chief Needs to 'Clear Out Bad Apples'

P. Stokes: "The writer is reporting on the results of a survey, not advocating any particular approach."

The survey is, in itself, an approach to solving the problem of reforming or reorganizing OPD. A thoughtful writer might simply make the point that there could be (I would say should be) other approaches.

As you put it "Who would want the job?" Clearly the Oakland Mayor doesn't want the job of reforming or reorganizing OPD so she decides to pass the chore on to yet another chief. A chief who will come and go and thus there will be no change.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

This is a flagrant act of unlawful harassment, discrimination and even a borderline Hate Crime.

A lawsuit is definitely in order. If not (as an absolute last resort with nothing else left to lose) burning the property down in an act of civil disobedience.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

This sucks for all parties involved. For the tenant, it's impossible to find decent, affordable housing in the Bay. It would also suck to have to live in a place with a TRUMP sign stuck to it (yes, even Trump Tower).

While this new landlord sounds like a royal a$$, we have to remember a couple of things:
1. He does own the property
2. There is no right to affordable housing
3. When it's convenient for an entity (public or private), the entity will shut down an "illegal" or non-registered unit
4. Rent control is fantastic in theory, but it really does distort the market in a coveted location city
5. The current housing frenzy is part of a larger cycle that cannot be changed by one or two good-meaning rules
6. We all pay for rent control, and we, as a society, have to decide how and how much we are willing to pay
7. Real estate companies are like any other company - they're there to make money
8. The new arrivals to Oakland have generally been making it a much nicer, safer and more livable city (despite higher housing costs). I've only been here for 10 years and have seen enormous positive changes. We still have a long way to go, though.

Finally, I personally hate hearing statements about how, "I should be able to live here because I grew up here" or other arguments in that vein. Nobody has a right to live in any particular city nor should anyone be excluded from a particular city because of some accident of birth.

What a loser piece of shit! Using people is bad enough but fucking with their art is deplorable. His ass deserves prison time for sure. Karma will follow.

Re: “Annapurna in Old Oakland Is a New Go-To Spot for 'Everyday' Nepalese-Indian

Just visited Annapurna. Lovely decor, not as good as Hamro Aangan/Albany. The Khashi Ko Masu (goat wet curry) at Annapurna is not as good as at Aangan--lacks complexity and depth. No grilled tomato, btw. The fried fish is also better at Aangan, with a lighter batter and not overcooked. The cauliflower/potato curry was indifferent, too. You're right about the naan and lamb mo-mo's, however--both were outstanding at Annapurna.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

Jeff, you can't be seriously claiming equivalency between Hillary Clinton and a man whose VP wanted to make women hold funerals for their miscarriages and use tax funds to finance gay conversion "therapy". A man whose Cabinet picks include a man too racist for the federal courts; an avowed white supremacist, and a man who wants to send people to Guantanamo Bay for tweeting.

Or are all of those horrors OK with you because they affect people who you don't consider to be real people anyway?

Bio believably says: "always eyeing how to maximize rents, minimize expenses and squeeze out every dollar of cash flow." Time to work on squeezing out some human kindness, too. It's not about who Gorelik voted for, so much as it is about being a decent human being.

Re: “Oakland Landlord Evicts Tenant, Then Hangs Pro-Trump Billboard on Building

How is the sign creating a hostile environment? What if it had been a Hillary sign, then it would be okay? As rational adults, we need to realize that just because someone has a different point of view or opinion, that doesn't mean they are full of hate. Real progress is made when people can share their opinions and work together towards a common goal. I mean no disrespect by this but just because you've rented an apartment for 21 years doesn't give you ownership rights.
