Re: “Survivor, Oakland City Hall: Power Struggle Led to Expulsion of City Clerk from Closed Session

Yes, something improper OCCURRED over a year ago, however there is no proof the City Clerk had anything to do with it. If you worked in the City...and in the Clerk's office it shouldn't surprise you that there were leaks. When I was there information was leaked all the time. I guess being fair doesn't matter to you, though. You do hold a grudge ma'am, because you are still providing no facts. I would absolutely fill out a speaker's card on July 26th, however, I don't think it will be necessary as the President of the Council has brought this legislation forward and ONLY council can pass a resolution to release the Clerk of her duties. After reading your last post, it is clear that a college degree does not equate to intelligence so I can see why she intimidates you. She would never make the grammatical, syntax or spelling errors that you did even with her "G.E.D.". I do not hide the fact that I consider her and Mike Munson close friends. That is why it is so personally offensive that you are trying to disparage both of them on this public forum by implying they are not intelligent enough to perform duties that you obviously couldn't manage yourself. Now, in my time at the City I heard nothing but accolades for her work. I DID have to work twice as hard to rebuild the reputation of past Legislative Recorders and even the ACC position as there was apparently some problems in THAT position historically. You hold no grudge, but felt it necessary to make her your profile picture. You hold no grudge, but you want someone that has many achievements and few (if any, failures) during her time in the Clerk's office to resign. Clearly, you don't care about the City of Oakland at all. Either that or you are just as immature as the current administration. If that weren't the case, your personal opinion of her wouldn't matter. You would be able to see past whatever happened more than 5 years ago, as I don't have a clue who you are and I worked there beginning in 2011, and focus on the duties of the Clerk and whether or not she's performed those duties effectively. You can take your petty platitude somewhere else. I don't need you to wish me a blessed day. I've lived a blessed life and will continue to do so.

Re: “Marijuana Laws On The Ballot in Seven States And Climbing This November Election

What we're seeing is the tail trying to wag the dog, when states make laws that directly conflict with federal (CSA) ones then "federal supremacy" steps in and is the law of the land according to our Constitution. Until Uncle Sam says its legal to "sell" and "profit" from a controlled substance and the transactions it simply cannot be lawful! If following state law has the potential of someone being prosecuted by federal entities and a ten year to life sentence in federal prison then the 5th Amendment also comes into play. The higharchy of law has existed for hundreds of years and any change has to occur from the "top down" not the "bottom up" or no individual is safe or protected from self incrimination and potential prosecution. Wake up America and smell the cannabis, tell congress to get off their ass and actual do something to resolve this issue once and for ALL! Marijuana is s plant put on this earth and given to us by God, it's not a drug manufactured by man and does NOT belong on the schedule of the CSA. If tomatoes had healing properties and helped us feel better and happier and think more freely would tomatoes be a "controlled substance" too? Think about it folks

Re: “Survivor, Oakland City Hall: Power Struggle Led to Expulsion of City Clerk from Closed Session

So Ms. Rahim, since only people that have education past high school can understand you, why don't you try talking to me? I graduated college with honors so I'm sure I'll understand. Where do you get off implying that someone is ill prepared for a job that she has done WELL for a decade because of her level of education? She was appointed and approved by the CAO and council of that time (all presumed college educated people) and they have had no problems with her work product or ethic since. Even if she was a whistleblower, which you cannot unequivocally prove and should not say unless you can, how is that a problem? Would you want a keeper of the record that was morally compromised? Do you even understand how that makes her ineffective? You sound bitter and spiteful since you clearly couldn't handle the job and speaking from experience you don't need a college education to do it. So let me be clear, the clerk and Mr. Munson are some of the most hard working, intelligent, informed people I know at the city. They are the people that everyone goes to when they need something. So if all you came here to do was feed some grudge you have because your work was subpar, you don't want it here. You can be mad, you can dislike her... Whatever but this is about her work. Unless you can talk specifically and factually about her work you need not comment anymore.

Since you only have a high school diploma it would be very difficult to comprehend my

Good night & thanks for sharing LaTonda's article. Sabrina (City Manager) is highly intelligent; she banned the City Clerk for the past year from Closed Session for a well deserved reason!!!!!

Re: “Letters to Bay Area Media: Crime Is Way Up in San Francisco; Why Aren't You Reporting About It?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows this. The news does not report all SF crime in order to keep the squeaky clean reputation it has to keep transplants and tourists coming. Today is a perfect example. Today (7/20/16) a daytime fatal shooting in the Potrero Hill projects never got mentioned tonight on the news. Every shooting that happens in SF does not get reported compared to Oakland where they report and create backstories and interviews to embed in people's minds that Oakland bad, SF good.

Re: “Survivor, Oakland City Hall: Power Struggle Led to Expulsion of City Clerk from Closed Session

I was there, I worked for Ceda, I know all about it. it's not where you start it's where you finish. I started at the city as a student trainee, I manage KTOP currently. All I have is a HS diploma, but I work my butt off, and LaTonda is probably the smartest person in the entire city so not sure your point.

Actually Michael Munson I resigned .... If you dont know LaTonda's eduational background, just google Its will tell you she didnt pass the 10th grade. Or ask her yourself. You shared this article on your facebook page thats how I know about it. And you can also ask her how she was a whistle blower for the former City Clerk Ceda Floyd its all PUBLIC RECORD & PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE!

Re: “Why Does the Berkeley City Council Care About a Dog Meat Festival in China?

In South Korea, which has a strong and long duration of Western cultural influence, dog restaurants remain somewhat common and a choice for older Koreans who are feeling under-the-weather. The trauma of the dog being beaten adds stress-related chemicals to the flesh, which in turn are supposed to provide health benefits to the people who eat it. It is pricey meat. However, dog eating is not popular with younger Koreans and small dogs are increasinglng finding their way into apartment dweller homes as pets. Kudos for Berkeley City for flexing their soft power, but don't expect this practice in Asia to go away in the near future.

Re: “Survivor, Oakland City Hall: Power Struggle Led to Expulsion of City Clerk from Closed Session

I've had a couple of dozen interactions with City Clerk Simmons or her department over the past few years. Under her supervision her staff performs their functions efficiently and courteously regardless of who you are or whether you politically oppose whoever is currently in the seats of Oakland power.. She is also one of the select few city employees who answers emails after hours and on weekends on time sensitive matters.

Let her do her job. She's good at it.

There should be very few closed sessions and only in very limited circumstances such as discussions of the litigation risks in law suits. Holding a closed session to say hide the City Attorney's opinion that a City decision was illegal, needs to be publicly disclosed, even if it costs us a lawsuit.

It's obvious you don't know the City Clerk she is one of the most respected Clerks in her profession. Jamaal, we're you working @ the City and have direct knowledge of why the prior Clerk left. If not don't spend rumors.

Re: “Survivor, Oakland City Hall: Power Struggle Led to Expulsion of City Clerk from Closed Session

LaTonda should kindly stepdown. As a City Ckerk all Closed Session documents should be protected and she took a Oath of office to protect them and she failed. She was a whistleblower in 2004 to oust former City Clerk Ceda Floyd to gain her position as the new City Clerk with only a 10th grade education. Sometimes its not about what you know...its who you know:)

Re: “Survivor, Oakland City Hall: Power Struggle Led to Expulsion of City Clerk from Closed Session

Hiring a private detective to investigate leaks? Sounds like something from the Nixon administration. I recall they called the leak investigators in the Nixon administration "Plumbers". All of them ended up in federal prison. I think Mayor Schaaf is getting carried away - the public has a right to know what's going on in City Hall. Even these "closed door sessions" are a little dubious. I think Mayor Schaaf's leadership has been horrendous. This police scandal with the teenage hooker - other departments are involved but they are not firing police chiefs right and left or trying to put civilians in charge of PD. You've got a few bad apples on OPD - other department too - big deal fire them and let's move on - you don't need the historonics we've seen from Schaff. Her wacky leadership has got the national media covering the teenage-hooker story - which has lead to a all this bad publicity for Oakland. Oakland is a great City - got some problems - like most metro cities - - big deal, solve them without all this soap opera like drama. Schaaf isn't doing that - she's making things worse with her wacky behavior.

Re: “Why Does the Berkeley City Council Care About a Dog Meat Festival in China?

There are many animal rescues in CA, Hope for Paws and MarleyMutts to name two, which are working with rescues in China and Korea to stop this practice. But what they can do is just a drop in the bucket compared to the dogs that are languishing in small cages waiting to be killed and eaten. Particular types of dogs are also being bread as a food source (they look like a combo Samoyed/Husky). It's quite sad when you think about it. A tiny number of these animals are "saved" by rescues and shipped here - but should we really be doing this with the amount of dogs in shelters needing to be "saved" from extermination as well.

Re: “Survivor, Oakland City Hall: Power Struggle Led to Expulsion of City Clerk from Closed Session

"How does this city clerk LaTonda Simmons hold the job of City clerk with only a high school education?????"

This seems to me to be very biased, unfair and uninformed.

LaTonda seems to be fair and respectful when she deals with the public in the often very tense environment of a City Council meeting. I think she is generally well-liked among the public and she seems to have been well-respected by Council members. LaTonda's job isn't easy.

I have not heard anything about her failure to perform her duties properly and efficiently.

Whether or not she has had a higher education, her language and cognitive skills seem to be up to the job.

I am not suggesting that LaTonda is a whistleblower. However whistleblowers or leakers are very important for democracy when, as with our elected officials, laws are broken and blatant tactics are applied to avoid transparency.
