Re: “Mexico's Top Investigative Journalist Talks Trump, U.S.-Mexico Relations, and the Dangers of Reporting at UC Berkeley

Mexico has a stricter immigration policy than the United States. On top of that, they actually have a wall on their southern border. Who is she to lecture? Just more nonsense from the left.

Hobart, is the Constitution written in English or Spanish? And why should citizens of a great country care about some shithole everyone is trying to leave?

Re: “Blacklisted: How The Oakland Police Department Discriminates Against Rappers and Music Venues

A friend of mine was killed in a shooting outside of vinyl by a stray bullet. He had nothing to do with it and was playing a show next door at a different venue. That doesn't fit your narrative I guess but I'll never get my friend back. RIP Emilio.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Fire Department Still Seriously Under-Staffed

If the Fire Dept sworn (aka uniformed) positions were so overworked, there wouldn't be lines stretching around the block when applications are taken for those positions. Visit a couple of fire stations and then observe local OPD and compare the relaxed, fit appearance of the firefighters to the stressed out of shape cops. You want to be a firefighter in Oakland, not a cop.

If we're understaffed at the firefighter line level, blame the very .effective state and national fire fighters' associations that got laws passed requiring firefighters to respond to medical 911 calls instead of civilian, lower paid EMT's. With newer building code requirements, fires have dramatically declined (or would have if codes enforced). Hiring more line officers is not he solution.

Re: “Mexico's Top Investigative Journalist Talks Trump, U.S.-Mexico Relations, and the Dangers of Reporting at UC Berkeley

American journalists don't speak Spanish nor do they understand Mexican culture. So coverage of Mexican politics and economics really does not exist.
Ditto most American citizens, even those who play the tourist down south. Ditto Trump, who is nothing other than a typically monolingual American ignoramus.

Re: “Blacklisted: How The Oakland Police Department Discriminates Against Rappers and Music Venues

It's so easy to point at shootings that have occurred and say "We got to be safe," but meanwhile ignore the bigger picture. What about the illegal drugs and deaths stemming from raves? What about violence at 49ers' games? What about the violence at recent protests? Should we ban all forms of free speech or assembly if sometimes the outcomes are not what we'd hoped?

Re: “Blacklisted: How The Oakland Police Department Discriminates Against Rappers and Music Venues

How many people have gotten into a scuffle at the Fox or Paramount or New Parish, gone to their car to retrieve a gun and then ended up shoot innocent people while trying to kill the person they fought with??? This is a complex issue.

Re: “Condominium Conversions in Oakland Displace Renters and Undermine Affordability, According to Tenants and Housing Experts

Oh, Ernest Montague, what happens when all the thousands of people you and others depend on (teachers, service workers--you probably like to buy a coffee or eat in a restaurant, right?--non-profit workers, culture workers, laborers, skilled blue collar, etc etc) can't afford to live here? Probably never crossed your mind. Glad to see at least YOU have benefited, which is really all that matters

Re: “Condominium Conversions in Oakland Displace Renters and Undermine Affordability, According to Tenants and Housing Experts

Supply and demand. Overpopulation.

For the foreseeable future, because of overpopulation, it will not be possible for working class Americans in the California Bay Area to own, or even rent, a home (as envisioned by most Americans, and as defined by Vincent J Cannato in "A Home of One's Own," and as was the case in the first half of the last century, before California's population passed the tipping point).

The "housing problem" will not be "resolved," even when we have millions living in usagi goya ("rabbit hutches").

This article sure makes a mountain out of a mole hill. Even with the present laws its is actully very expensive and tricky to convert an apartment building into condos.

Re: “Blacklisted: How The Oakland Police Department Discriminates Against Rappers and Music Venues

It sucks, but when you hear of a shooting at a music show around here, it's almost always a rap show. Not blaming the music, not blaming the artists, and not supporting the removal of rap shows and venues from the Town. But this extra police scrutiny doesn't come out of nowhere, and advocates need to stop pretending that it does.

Re: “Condominium Conversions in Oakland Displace Renters and Undermine Affordability, According to Tenants and Housing Experts

The City of Oakland has no legal nor moral mandate to accommodate everyone.

I lived in SF for years. I always wanted to buy a house there, but could never quite afford it. I moved to Oakland thirty years ago because I could afford a house here. That's life. It's not designed to make sure that all of us receive special treatment. If you can't afford Oakland, move. It didn't hurt me when I could not buy in SF. It was good for me.

Re: “Blacklisted: How The Oakland Police Department Discriminates Against Rappers and Music Venues

Perhaps the violence and aggressive behavior that seems to all too often show up at Rap events is a reason for not wanting them.

Re: “Berkeley Police Basically MIA At Saturday's Violent Pro-Trump Vs. AntiFa Brawl

If you throw M80s at a dog in Berkeley, they would arrest you. Apparently, the berkley police think conservatives are not even dogs.

How the police are unable to stop 40 or so 150lb scrawny thugs from assaulting people is nothing short of shocking.

Is someone threw an m80 at you in the commission of a crime, you would have the right to defend yourself using whatever means you can.

It is assault, nothing less.

BTW, the police didn't search antifa. You can watch them march right threw the barriers without going through the checkpoints.

Re: “Blacklisted: How The Oakland Police Department Discriminates Against Rappers and Music Venues

There may have been no death threats in the case of hip-hop/rap events, but the narrative completely ignores the shootings and other crime that has accompanied such events. EBX itself documented such in the past years. See back issues.

The city is short resources to deal with what goes on here as just "normal wear and tear". If the promoters had managed to self control the problems in the past, just *MAYBE* the knee jerk reaction we're seeing *MIGHT* not be going on. But these problems are as much a part of the mystique as the music... Maybe the promoters don't want to keep it in hand.

And it seems even the venues themselves see these events as too much trouble... They don't see a reason to stand up for the promoters. What does that say?

Re: “Condominium Conversions in Oakland Displace Renters and Undermine Affordability, According to Tenants and Housing Experts

Even efforts to build new housing in Oakland will be met with NIMBYs screaming "it changes the Oakland I grew up in"... Effectively demanding no changes here while the entire state, as a desirable place to live and work, is flooded with new bodies.

I know... Take a page from Trumps book and build a wall! Yeah, right.

Now that the drug fever has passed, how about a real solution... Like building new units? Naaaa.... Never gonna happen. The bread and circuses crowd has learned how to VERY effectively block ANY new development unless they are able extort a piece of the action from the people who invested in blighted and largely dilapidated property in risky parts of town with the idea of actually having them be more than death traps. As Clarence C. Johnson said, it's called realizing the value of the investment.

Even those who bought 50 years ago are allowed to do that... Aren't they? No? why not? Explain it to me.

Re: “Blacklisted: How The Oakland Police Department Discriminates Against Rappers and Music Venues

Claerence you are close but missed the boat on this. Marduk was cancelled because a group made death threats on the employees and owners of the venue if Marduk were allowed to play there. This was based on allegations of them being nazi sympathizers, white supremacists, and having anti immigration beliefs.

From my understanding there were no death threats made in anticipation of the rappers concerts and it was more about people getting into fights, which happens at all kinds of places where large amounts of people are drinking and partying

Interesting how this article complete leaves out how the Swedish heavy-metal band Marduk, had to recently cancel their show. I guess this doesnt fit in with the author's narrative?

Re: “Condominium Conversions in Oakland Displace Renters and Undermine Affordability, According to Tenants and Housing Experts

"Housing-policy experts say the steady drip of conversions is eliminating affordable rental housing in Oakland." Really? "Housing policy experts" say eliminating rent control inventory is eliminating affordable rental housing? Such insight.

Amazing EBX cant find any "housing policy experts" that say increasing housing supply will have downward pressure on rents. We can blame Oakland officials all we want, but when you try to do two opposing things - constrain market rate housing supply while also keeping rents affordable, you're going to have a byzantine set of laws such as purchasing conversion credits that are going to constantly need revision because of the meteoric rise of market value housing due to constrained supply.

If you bought $1k worth of Apple stock 10 years ago thats worth $10k now, would you sell it to a friend in a private sale for only $1500? No, you would sell it on the market for what its worth. Its called realizing the value of an investment.
