DJ Pam the Funkstress

When: Thursdays, 9 p.m.
Phone: 510-548-1159
Price: free

DJ Pam the Funkstress is one half of Oaktown's top hip-hop act the Coup -- the subject of many East Bay Express features alongside partner, vocalist, and pinko comedian "Boots" Riley. Take a listen to the Coup on 2001's Party Music or 2006's Pick a Bigger Weapon, then follow your ears to the Thursday Throwdown at Shattuck Down Low (2284 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley) this week. Boots is off touring with Tom Morello, but Pam is holding it down with the equally tasteful DJ Platurn and the ubiquitous DJ Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist. Berkeley's Shattuck Avenue shall bump with hip-hop classics, Eighties flashback, house, electro funk, and soul -- emphasis on funk. Besides, what else you gonna do? Go see Soulja Boy in San Jose? Pfffhht. 9 p.m., free.
