Same as it ever was, this Berkeley Irish bar has been around since the days when Ronald Reagan was California governor, and it hasn't changed much - although you can now order a cheeseburger as well as traditional Irish fare like corned beef and cabbage. Lots of beers on tap, but why not just have a Guinness or a Harp while you're here? It=s certainly appropriate, and the regulars wont look at you like youre from Mars. Entertainment includes Irish Dance and Ceili Mondays at 9 p.m. (dance instructions start at 7 p.m.); Open-mic Tuesdays with sign-up at 7:30 and show at 8 p.m., no cover; Berzerkley Poetry Slam on Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. with house band Three Blind Mice accompanying, $7, $5 w/ student ID; live music Thursday, Friday. and Saturday, check the website or call for calendar info. Full bar and 20 drafts, dance floor and stage. The kitchen serves food until 10 p.m.

I really look forward to seeing Talons of Peace. They play out rarely, and I hear they are finally releasing new material.
The Tony Mayfield Experience delivered the most inspirational performance with the help of many talented musicians of all ages styles. It was off the hook...

PAPAMALO: The Revenge of the B-Town Mob. 4-time Bammie Award Winner Plays the Starry Plough Friday May 1st.
4-time Bammie award winner, Piero Amadeo Infante, vocalist, and founder of the Freaky Executives, Los Angelitos, and Los Mocosos, plays the Starry Plough Friday, May 1st with his new band PAPAMALO.
Bringing it all back home to the the building where he lived in as a child, directly over the stage of the Starry Plough, and La Peña in Berkeley,
Piero Amadeo Infante plays songs from his rock opera about Oakland and Berkeley Titled: "Sadtown: Hour of the Rabbit"
Twelve stories of life, death, love and survival for street kids in the strange and sometimes dangerous world of Oakland and Berkeley in the 1970's, amid drugs, sex, COINTELPRO, political upheaval and the ultimate musical revenge of the B-Town Mob, all the neighborhood kids who later went on to play music and affect the entire world with their sound. Ska, Funk, Latin, Electronica, Classic rock, Afro-Cuban, and ambient music are all represented seamlessly, in a show that brings together old friends who created the B-Town sound. This concert will deliver new songs and endless optimism, which flies in the face of an increasingly negative, fashionably depressed, and commercially-controlled local musical scene.
It's a family affair, as Amygdala Hijack, featuring Tobias Hawkins (from Laundry, Counting Crows, the Girlfriend Experience, and who also hails from the same block as Piero) with Charles Stella, (The Uptones), and Mooska (Musashi Lethridge from Uptones)
Members of SF's politically hard-hitting Latin rock band, Los Mocosos will be playing with Papamalo, and the entire night promises to be an unpredictable musical journey, from some locals who know how to throw down in clubs.
Please accept our open invitation, list it, come down and check it out, review it, or interview someone from one of the bands before the show.
Thanks for your time.
Piero

THE REVENGE OF B-TOWN Berkeley's best music all in one place! (Starry Plough Friday May 1st!!!)
MY FIRST REAL CLUB GIG: Returning home to my origins.
This coming May 1st I will be doing my first real club gig with my band PAPAMALO.
It will be at the Starry Plough in Berkeley, and there is good reason to have it there.
When I was 11, I lived directly above club there, at 2104 prince, and would listen to the sounds of "little Andre and the funky sunset trio" and Sly stone, and other bay area luminaries, as they played into the night.
My bed was directly above the stage, and I remember hearing thumping bass and falsetto vocals as I would fall off to sleep. Back then the club was called the Topper Club so when I was told that the date was open, I thought, "Perfect!"
In that apartment I saw my baby brother come come from the hospital, attended school across the street at the Black Panther school, and watched the son of the Los Angeles free press commit suicide by cop, after I surprised him on the roof, as he casually shot into to the structure across the street. turned around glanced at me, ignored me and went on shooting. Strange, but this is also a part of the story......
This is the block where I kissed my first girl, fought my first fight, stole my first ice cream sandwich, bit my first person, lived on Flint's BBQ, rocked out to Undisputed truth, Jackson 5, and Badfinger, and grew to have a love of music that has lasted a lifetime. And I'd like to share it with you.
The first thing that came to mind, was to get another kid right of that same block, Tobias Hawkins, (Counting Crows, the Girlfriend Experience) to play the show with me with his bad ass new band AMYGDALA HIJACK, and then when MUSASHI LETHRIDGE, (lead vocalist for the UPTONES) agreed to do the gig, it all took off from there. I also have a few other surprises for everyone there.
If you want to catch a show the likes of which you don't see around here anymore, a show where different music, people, and energy is rampant, a show with first-class people and great music, where a kaleidoscope of colors and sound swirl before your eyes in a great neighborhood venue, then drop by the STARRY PLOUGH on Friday May 1st and say hi. This will be a different kind of gig altogether.

This is a welcoming Irish music session, that often boasts between 10 and 20 musicians (on a good night) playing fiddles, flutes, whistles, banjos, mandolins and other instruments. Shay Black hosts the session weekly and invites selected people to sing during the evening. A sliding scale applies, which usually means buying the band a drink ($3 - $5) when the "woolly hat" comes around. "Quiet" (meaning listen) when people sing is an Irish expectation, and is expected here too, but there is lots of time to laugh, socialize, drink and have fun when the session tunes are being played.
