Lois the Pie Queen passed away almost fifteen years ago, but her legendary Oakland restaurant continues to thrive under the stewardship of her son. The food is only half the charm — the homey, funky feel draws a crowd of longtime regulars. Breakfast and lunch are superb, with fluffy flapjacks, creamy grits, and biscuits worth an intercity drive. Even if it’s before noon, no one would chide you for following up your steak and eggs with a slice of Lois’s regal lemon icebox pie.
