Contrary to its inconspicuous location next to Grand Avenue’s Safeway, La Taza de Cafe is an elegant setting for a date or romantic dinner. True to its former identity as a house, the restaurant is a warm and inviting place, with skylights, hardwood floors, and a back patio for serving up tasty tapas dishes from Cuba and Latin America. La Taza also offers some lively entertainment: Brazilian music on Thursdays, alternating flamenco and belly dancing on Friday nights, traditional Cuban music on Saturdays, and rotating musicians on Sundays.

Enjoy a night of salsa dancing, flamenco and some cutting-edge pan-Hispanic tapas at this multifaceted yet cozy Oakland nightspot. Creamy halibut ceviche, lusty roasted-veggie empanadas and an exemplary Cuban sandwich are standouts; the chewy slow-roasted pork and watery coconut paella are less successful. The brunch menu features a delectable variation on eggs Benedict prepared with rum-glazed ham and Colombian corn cakes, and bar specialties include a limoncello-laced white sangria and a refreshing champagne mojito. Save room for the Venezuelan chocolate mousse.

Hours: Dinner Tue.-Thu. and Sun. 5-10:30 p.m.; Fri.-Sat. 5 p.m.-midnight; Sunday brunch 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
