Julius Eastman (1940-90) was one of the first composers to convincingly combine rock and house influences with minimalist processes. Active in New York throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he endured addiction and homelessness and died alone, likely of AIDS-related conditions. His pioneering work paved the way for generations of experimental composers and pop artists. This performance will be the first major Bay Area presentation of his compositions, including Gay Guerilla, an expansive work for four pianos.

HIGHEST RATING!
"The ensemble work [in Body Awareness] is exemplary, as the cast negotiates [playwright Annie] Baker's smart, provocative dialogue..." - Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle
It's "Body Awareness Week" at a small Vermont college and feminist professor Phyllis (Amy Resnick) and her partner, Joyce (Jeri Lynn Cohen), are hosting a male guest artist (Howard Swain) who specializes in female nude photographs. The couple is already struggling with Joyce's 21-year old son, Jared (Patrick Russell), whom they believe suffers from Asperger's Syndrome. When their guest arrives, both his presence and his chosen subject matter instigate a new level of discomfort.

The tangible weight still lies in San Francisco, but it appears that Oakland's comedy scene is finally, genuinely taking off, even in the face of adversity. Last October, said adversity took the form of a fruit-delivery truck running into a fire hydrant and flooding Miss Pearl's Jam House, the waterfront restaurant that has hosted local showcase Comedy Off Broadway for the last two years. Hosts Samson Koletkar and Joe Gleckler ploughed right on, missing only one night. They continued the very next evening, with a rescued sound system and a janky paper sign pointing people into the club's regatta room. Since then, the show has grown monstrously popular (considering the circumstances, at least), selling out many nights and giving the hosts enough traction to hold their event three times a week. Each night includes a headliner and featured act, and often the lineups can compete with what you'd find at the San Francisco Punch Line on a weeknight. With SF Sketchfest gracing Oakland for the first time this month, it looks like 2012 might be the year to build a viable comedy scene in Oakland. Comedy Off Broadway happens every Thursday through Saturday at Miss Pearl's Jam House (1 Broadway, Oakland). 8 p.m., $10. ComedyOffBroadway.com
