Re: “Vegetable Gardening for Dummies

I like most gardeners suffer from slugs and snails in this damp weather I have tried beer traps, copper tape, and wire salt, egg shells, even throwing them in my neighbours garden ( just kidding ) etc all these methods are not practical long lasting and are harmful to our wildlife. recently a lady Hosta grower recommended a new device to control slugs and snails called the slugbell she has used it and found it to be absolutely brilliant at controlling them. I have just ordered 6 of them to place around my hostas and other flowers in my garden , There web page is www.slugbell.com and are PET i.e. Cat , Dog , Bird and wildlife Safe Brilliant for pet owners ,they I will try anything to keep my garden looking how it should whilst protecting natures cycle . iszzabella from United kingdom

Re: “New Rasmussen Poll: 56 Percent Favor Legalizing and Regulating Marijuana

OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER (PART 1):

Federal researchers implanted several types of cancer, including leukemia and lung cancers, in mice, then treated them with cannabinoids (unique, active components found in marijuana). THC and other cannabinoids shrank tumors and increased the mice's lifespans. Munson, AE et al. Antineoplastic Activity of Cannabinoids. Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Sept. 1975. p. 597-602.

OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER, (PART 2):

In a 1994 study the government tried to suppress, federal researchers gave mice and rats massive doses of THC, looking for cancers or other signs of toxicity. The rodents given THC lived longer and had fewer cancers, "in a dose-dependent manner" (i.e. the more THC they got, the fewer tumors). NTP Technical Report On The Toxicology And Carcinogenesis Studies Of 1-Trans- Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, CAS No. 1972-08-3, In F344/N Rats And B6C3F Mice, Gavage Studies. See also, "Medical Marijuana: Unpublished Federal Study Found THC-Treated Rats Lived Longer, Had Less Cancer," AIDS Treatment News no. 263, Jan. 17, 1997.

OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER (PART 3):

Researchers at the Kaiser-Permanente HMO, funded by NIDA, followed 65,000 patients for nearly a decade, comparing cancer rates among non-smokers, tobacco smokers, and marijuana smokers. Tobacco smokers had massively higher rates of lung cancer and other cancers. Marijuana smokers who didn't also use tobacco had no increase in risk of tobacco-related cancers or of cancer risk overall. In fact their rates of lung and most other cancers were slightly lower than non-smokers, though the difference did not reach statistical significance. Sidney, S. et al. Marijuana Use and Cancer Incidence (California, United States). Cancer Causes and Control. Vol. 8. Sept. 1997, p. 722-728.

Re: “Off the Grid Comes to Alameda

Lili: I don't know all the nuances of Alameda's policy, but in general, you have to have a health permit to operate a food truck, period — parked on the street, at Off the Grid, or wherever.

Re: “Jerry Brown's Optimism Has Been Costly

Not buying that Jerry painted the scenario as "Rosey" or that they failed to get signatures because of Jerry. Quit blaming others & get the signatures. Most likely a failure of will and money. Also, there are 2 tax initiatives not 1 = Jerry's & Molley Munger's.

Re: “Merritt College Nursing Woes

This program is still a failure. Before I enrolled in the fall of 2011, I looked at numerous negative comments with a great deal of skepticism. Now I now what you guys meant. No, it's not because the program itself is demanding and intense. All medical programs are. It's not because I'm a poor student. I've been always on top of the class, I study a lot, and I LOVE studying.

However, at this particular school instructors make you think that you are a puppet in their hands. If they like you, they will help you through the tests, falsify grades (yes) and be kind. If not, no matter what you do, you are in trouble. Putting you on probation is one of their favorite methods.

You are more likely to get in trouble if you smart, independent, have some background in the medical field or like to question the material. If you are the opposite and prefer not to think about cause & effect relationships, but rather just learn by heart the information from the textbook (does not matter if it has mistakes, typos, etc.), then you are most likely to pass and become a truly uneducated nurse. If you think that instructors will guide through the process, answer your questions in class or via email, please wake up. Some instructors simply lack manners. They would make an appointment with you but would never show up. You think they owe you an explanation? Nope. No comments provided. You expect them to review material before tests? Haha. Nope, you are on your own here. Yes, personal preferences, discrimination, prejudices all take place here. So welcome to Merritt without merit, and shame on us all for not fighting against its corruption and poorest level of education.

Re: “Oakland Planning Commission Rejects Lake Merritt Dog Park Proposal

It was far and away the best location at the lake to put the dog park. There is simply no way to put the dog park in the middle of a bird sanctuary, next to Fairyland, half a mile down a no dogs allowed path.

Mixed used sacrificed to preserve the views of a few dozen people on the hill above.
