Wood shop, that is

MON 2/2

Wood shop: It’s not just for wasteoids anymore. According to Kids’ Carpentry, it’s one of the finest ways to learn important skills that will last a lifetime — skills such as measuring, drilling, and sawing, activities that help K-6 pupils accomplish goals while acquiring a respect for process and safety. With the assistance of a well-trained teacher, the students explore the uses of basic tools ranging from a miter box to C-clamps, nails, and paint. Before they even realize they’ve actually been fed math, these young apprentices turn two-by-fours into such fabulous products as trucks, airplanes, or bird feeders. The best part is that it doesn’t even feel like school. Started in 1982, Kids’ Carpentry has since grown to more than 24 programs throughout the Bay Area. The Albany Recreation Center hosts the classes, which run from February 2 through March 3. Cost for residents is $72; nonresidents, $82. Register by phone at 510-524-9283 or online at AlbanyCA.org. Get carded

Remember when you first figured out how to cut a heart out of a piece of paper? Remember glorying in its curves, marveling at the miracle of symmetry? Your kids can fold and snip to their hearts’ content (not to mention glue, glitter, and scribble, et al.) this Saturday at the Free Valentine Making Program at the Castro Valley Library (20055 Redwood Rd.). No supplies necessary: kids only need to bring creativity and a hankering to communicate with their secret crush. Children younger than five must be accompanied by an adult. Child’s Pose

Think of your children. Now think of them sitting quietly, in a single position, for a few minutes. Crazy, huh? World Yoga Healing Arts Center would like to make that fantastic vision a reality, one Wednesday at a time. The center, located at 1530 S. Main St. in Walnut Creek, is offering Yoga for Kids classes every week, 3:45 to 4:30 p.m., for boys and girls age five to nine. Kids will learn to relax, concentrate, be gentle with others, and become aware of their bodies, all while slithering like a snake (in Cobra position), roaring like a lion, standing tall in Mountain Pose, and more. Teacher Toi Lynn Prevost is a licensed psychotherapist, expressive arts therapist, and, of course, a yoga instructor. Cost is $60 for six classes. 925-274-9642. — Stefanie Kalem
