Drawing from a body of hip-hop and alternapunk, Inspector Double Negative and the Equal Positives are a multiculti menage of surly ne’er-do-wells who truly represent the Bay Area’s musical and cultural landscape. They’ve opened for Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, tha Alkaholiks, Joan Baez, Zap Mama, and the Beat Junkies, and have played at just about every East Bay location with access to an electrical socket. It’s not so much that their sound is fresh (it is), nor that the members bring a lineage of bay hustle to each performance (they do) — rather, it’s the amalgamation of a world of influences from the past and present, creating a prosperous future as witnessed when these boys do their thing. Their songs are typically about three things: Space, girls, and having fun. They break from traditional molds, reject stereotypes, and seek to “get paid, get laid, and still go to heaven.” Somewhere in there, something very noble and heroic resides.
