.Most Nurturing Forest: Many paths for contemplation

Redwood Regional Park

Located just fifteen minutes from downtown Oakland, Redwood Regional Park feels like a different time zone. It’s not unusual to glimpse golden eagles, deer, raccoons, rabbits, or squirrels amid the 1,836 acres of evergreens, chaparral, and grasslands. But what really sets the park apart is the grove of 150-foot-tall coast redwoods — Sequoia sempervirens. As you stroll down French Trail at the bottom of the canyon that makes up the center of the park, the towering second-growth redwoods block out the hustle and bustle of the East Bay. No pollution and no noise, other than the trickle of Redwood Creek and the wind rustling through the overhead canopy. It just smells and feels like another world. And as you tiptoe among long-leafed green ferns, you might even spot rainbow trout in the creek.
