Dona Spring

Forget Kriss Worthington’s Boy Scout battles or Jerry Brown’s casino fixation. Toss out the tricycle that Shirley Dean mounts unsteadily every “Ride Your Bike to Work” day. There’s no better source of merriment than Berkeley City Councilmember Dona Spring, whose overriding earnestness and the terror with which she receives public criticism are legendary. Getting a rise out of her is as easy as saying “panhandling ordinance” — just drop those two words and watch Spring, who naïvely signed onto the vicious and ultimately unconstitutional law in 1994, turn green with horror. When she isn’t howling about being prodded by the press, she’s tickling her more cynical allies on the left with her always-ready-to-blanch PC sensitivity. Recently, Spring telephoned Zoning Adjustment Board member Gene Poschman, who happened to be throwing a barbecue at the time. “Hold on, Dona,” he reportedly said, “I gotta turn over the veal burgers.”
