.Most Accomplished Musician: And still one of the busiest, too

Dave Brubeck

At age 86, Concord-born jazz legend Brubeck shows no signs of slowing down. Still composing, recording, and performing, the pianist and composer — who has been credited with proving that experimental jazz can achieve popular success — has defended his status as one of the genre’s few household names. He continues to be active in the Monterey Jazz Festival — the world’s longest-running jazz festival, which he helped establish by performing at its inception in 1958 — and was honored at its Golden Gala celebration last month. He was also a driving force behind the establishment of the Concord Jazz Festival in 1969, which has featured some of the genre’s biggest names and eventually catalyzed the construction of the Concord Pavilion. But Brubeck is still busy working on his legacy: He’s booked for gigs throughout the summer.
