Kittenz and Thee Glitz (Emperor Norton)

It seems like the farther we move ahead in technology, the more we yearn for the simpler analogue sounds of yesteryear. How else to explain longtime Chicago producer Felix Da Housecat (aka Felix Stallings Jr.) and his latest creation, Kittenz and Thee Glitz, a raucous and glamorous robotic romp through perky analogue synths, clickety-thin beats, and glossy yet unemotional vocals. The album is finally seeing a release date in America after being named a 2001 Album of the Year by the UK’s Muzik magazine, and Kittenz does indeed appeal– thanks to its rough-and-tough attitude and no-nonsense production values, sounding as much new wave (think Kim Wilde or Berlin) as it does early techno. Felix gets plenty of help on the glitz detail, thanks to a slew of guest stars, including vocals from France’s Miss Kittin (getting super-seductive on three tracks), Melistar (pumping the “I don’t give a shit” attitude on three tunes), and Harrison Crump (hitting the soulful high octaves reminiscent of early-’80s era Michael Jackson). On the production side, Felix gets some help from Chicago’s Junior Sanchez, Tommie Sunshine, and producer Dave The Hustler. After 16 years’ experience as a DJ and producer (an incredibly long time in the dance music world), Felix Da Housecat still manages to keep his fans guessing and bounces back in a big way with an alluring and delightfully trashy record.
