.Detroit Grand Pu Bahs

Funk All Y'all (Jive Electro)

“Pu bahs” are people of high status, and this wild pair from techno’s birthplace are way up (and out) there. Many silly word combinations have described the Pu Bah sound (from the label: “booty-bass duo”; the press: “sleazy minimalist electro”; and the Pu Bahs themselves: “funkno”).

Forming the basis of the Pu Bahs’ shtick are the beats and blather pioneered by Kraftwerk, Richard Pryor, and Parliament/Funkadelic; also expect goofy attitude not unlike that worked over by the Beastie Boys, 20 Fingers, and Green Velvet. The 1999 single “Sandwiches” is present on Funk in full glory, with its helium-voiced MC discussing that special relationship between a fellow’s “burger” and a lady’s “buns.” The relentless pace of “One Hump or Two” celebrates the booty hunt, and fits in snugly with the outtacontrol pulse of the song “Ride.” Eminem’s rant about his dead lover in the trunk of a car has nothing on the Front 242-esque “Off Beat Killer,” which extols necrophilia and automobile appreciation. On a similarly creepy tip, “Schizophrenic Investigator” delivers chilly, frenetic polyrhythms. The Pu Bahs bring the fun back on “Dr. Bootygrabber” (whose first name is Ernest, and middle is Freaky), a hysterical spoken-word ditty in which pants removal is paramount. Rank hath its privileges.
