Erica Varize, the mastermind behind the cut-and-sew boutique EVarize, has ushered in a new style of couture under the noses of many a Oakland/Berkeley resident. Her modest, though utterly fabulous, shop opened in 2005 and has quickly gained national recognition for its innovative, sophisticated, urbanized designs and means of production. Calling her boutique a fashion cafe, Varize lets patrons choose the designs they want, then cuts them custom to suit the body type and sense of personal style. This gives every piece unique flair while the base design remains true to its creator’s vision. Many cut-and-sew boutiques have popped up since, but none have matched this original.
