.Best Way to See the Entire East Bay

OCSC Sailing

From his office in the Berkeley Marina, Anthony Sandberg looks out over the San Francisco Bay and smiles. When he started the Olympic Circle Sailing Club in 1979 with a phone and a borrowed boat, his goal was to share the art, science, joy, and responsibility of sailing with anyone who wanted to learn. Today, OCSC is the largest single-location sailing school in the country, with a 10,000-square-foot facility, a fleet of fifty sailboats, and a team of eighty employees. OCSC offers a slew of both classroom and water courses geared toward all levels. For those who are not ready to plunk down full course fees, OCSC Sailing offers a two-hour introduction to sailing for just $40. In addition to the courses offered, membership with the company is a solid buy for someone who thinks he may have found his calling on the water. To augment classes and boat charters, members can take part in seminars, lectures, movies, organized outings, and social barbecues. Consistently ranked in the top hundred companies to work for in the Bay Area, OCSC Sailing donates 3 percent of its net sales to environmental protection groups worldwide. The company also sponsors sailing trips for underprivileged kids throughout the East Bay — bringing Sandberg closer and closer to his dream of giving everyone a chance to experience the wind and the waves for themselves.
