.Best Unsung Hero

Toni Locke

Toni Locke isn’t what you’d call a high-profile sort of person, but for years she’s edited the MacArthur Metro, which might just be the best neighborhood newspaper in the East Bay … and possibly beyond. Month after month, this chronicle of the goings-on in the Dimond, Laurel, and nearby neighborhoods features upbeat stories and articles critical of city officials and property owners, yet it never succumbs to the whiny, NIMBY tone that sometimes taints its counterparts. It also happens to be very well-designed and less cluttered than many of your garden-variety, slick, professional publications. That’s especially impressive, because the paper’s staff — including Locke — are volunteers. She says she’s “found her bliss” in editing, but modestly points to her staffers as the reason for the paper’s success. They point right back to her.
