Berkeley Tuolumne Family Camp

Although it’s not actually in the East Bay, Berkeley Tuolumne Family Camp is still the East Bay’s best summer camp. That is, if you like lounging next to or in a picturesque river, hiking among giant sugar pines, or singing wacky campfire songs. The 14.5-acre camp straddles the south fork of the Tuolumne River, about 45 minutes west of Yosemite National Park. It features rustic tent cabins along the river and in a nearby forest. All have decks that allow you to sleep out under the stars. In addition to swimming, hiking, and fishing, the camp includes volleyball, basketball, badminton, and ping pong, along with a “kiddie camp” for kids ages two to six so that parents can get some time to themselves. It’s somewhat expensive — $88 a day per adult and $45-$60 for children — but that includes three meals a day in the giant dining hall. You don’t actually need to be a Berkeley resident to use it, but that makes it popular, so you’ll need reservations well in advance. Reservations for next summer will be available this fall. The camp has undergone several management changes in recent years, and has had some problems. We hope that’s just temporary.
