Codornices Park

It’s rare to find a park with playground equipment reminiscent of the “old days” — no age guidelines posted, no rounded edges, no plastic pre-fab materials. Luckily, Berkeley has a few. The forty-foot-long concrete slide that meanders down the hillside at Codornices Park (across from the Rose Garden) definitely falls into the “old-school” category — it’s refreshing to find it still there in this litigious society of ours. Kudos to the city of Berkeley. The slide is frequented by parents and kids of various ages and abilities. Going down the slide alone really is a rite of passage for Berkeley youth. And going down the slide with your kids really is a highlight of being a Berkeley parent. To get going really fast, pick up one of the pieces of abandoned cardboard on your way up the steps to the top of the slide. But watch out — sometimes those seeking extra speed cover the slide with surf wax, making for an even more exhilarating ride than usual.
