.Best Running Track: Bay views and the scent of eucalyptus

Clark Kerr Track

There are few better places in the East Bay to run in circles — well, ovals — than the dirt track on Clark Kerr, a Cal housing complex about four blocks south of the main campus. The track, which can be reached via the steep pedestrian walkway where Derby Street meets Tanglewood Road (turn left through the gate at the top), offers a beautiful setting among fragrant eucalyptus trees. The well-groomed lawn on the east side of the track offers an excellent place to stretch or relax in the shade. But nothing beats the view as you round the last corner toward the home stretch. With Berkeley spread out below, the bay and San Francisco skyscrapers in the distance, and the Golden Gate Bridge and beyond in full view, it’s hard not to feel inspired. Even better, time your run for sunset and possibly catch a stunning deep-orange sky. Now this is why we live in the East Bay.
