In addition to its savory selection of Jamaican cuisine — the jerk chicken definitely stands out, though more adventurous foodies might want to try the curry goat — this Oakland reggae dance club features such salutary beverages as Long Islands and imported ginger beer, along with anything that can be mixed with peach schnapps. But sweet cocktails and delectable food are only the tip of the iceberg. What’s really made Karibbean City successful is its diverse entertainment lineup, which represents the panoply of Caribbean music from salsa to dancehall roots to Afropop. Moreover, its promoters are obviously keyed into the international reggae scene, having featured hot stars like Kevin Little and Junior Reid along with such perennially popular dance parties as Golden Touch Music’s “La Belle,” which recently relocated from Club Oasis. Since downtown Oakland still suffers from a surprising dearth of reggae nightlife, this venue is a welcome addition.
