Best Reef Aquarium Store
Lucky Goldfish
Reefkeeping may be the hot new thing among aquarists, but Lucky Goldfish has been at it for more than two decades. Don't let the name fool you; there is much more to this place than the homely goldfish: live corals, exotic reef fish like mandarins and tangs, and real ocean water ($1/gallon). Lucky Goldfish frequently offers tank-raised fish and pieces of coral fragmented from the store's own stock ("frags" to the initiated), allowing customers to populate their reef tanks without depleting a real reef in a Third World country. The store's display tank is a mini-scuba dive, with neon fish darting among staghorn-shaped corals. The knowledgeable staff keeps the display pristinely scrubbed of algae so the reef fantasy is untarnished. A rare, twenty-year-old elegance coral has pride of place in the tank; one-inch frags from the elegance cost $150, and require placement on a waiting list. Freshwater fish and general pet supplies are on sale too, but the reef section is the store's real boast.
