.Best Preservationist: Most effective guardians of open space

Save Mount Diablo

Mount Diablo may not seem to need much saving: Standing at 3,849 feet and preserved since 1921 as a state park — one of the first locations in California to earn such status — it seems to rise above the East Bay as a beacon of unspoiled wilderness. Yet flanked by development pressures on all sides, Mount Diablo and its rolling foothills are permanent only when committed to canvas or film by local artists lucky enough to find such a stunning landscape in their backyard. Since 1971, nonprofit organization Save Mount Diablo has worked to preserve the mountain’s natural beauty, biodiversity, and ecologically sound recreation opportunities. Much of the nonprofit’s energy has focused on land acquisition, and its efforts have increased secured open space around the mountain from 7,000 acres to more than 89,000 acres. Other recent successes include propagating the rare Mount Diablo buckwheat flower and protecting resident bobcats. Save Mount Diablo is as active and committed as ever to advocating for this East Bay treasure.
