.Best Place to Tone Your Quads: Smells like your mother’s perfume

Morcom Rose Garden

Oakland’s Mother of the Year celebration may be held here each May, but the Morcom Rose Garden is better known to local fitness buffs as the mother of all stair climbers — a gorgeous one at that. With upward of three thousand rose bushes in bloom from May through October, there’s no better place to sweat than this serene eight-acre spot a short jaunt from the bustle of Piedmont or Grand avenues. Dash up and down any of the handful of stone staircases that meander up the wooded hillsides, or make like the hardcore regulars and head directly to the mammoth 102-step flight that leads to the intersection of Vernon Street and Monte Vista Avenue. When your thighs can’t take it anymore, unwind with a stroll around the lovely aqua-bottomed fountains, stretch your legs on a bench (or collapse on one), and steal a sip or two from the water fountain. Just don’t forget to breathe — because somehow, inhaling the scent of Bride’s Dream and its aromatic kin melts body fat like magic.
