.Best Place to See a Monster

The Alameda Rockwall

Plant yourself on the jetty with a lawn chair, sunscreen, binoculars, and a beer. No promises, but this humble setting of outdoor scenery provides one of the best opportunities to witness the greatest beast that swims in the bay, the white sturgeon. These legendary animals plow their blunt snouts through the bay floor mud all year in search of food. Sometimes, however, they rise through the water column. Now and then they nose the surface, and on rare occasions these monsters leave the water entirely. Most sturgeon encounters come and go as a huge splash heard, but stick to your guns and eventually you’ll glimpse the entirety of the sight: five to twelve feet of armor-plated fish exiting the water on a path for the sun and hanging for a timeless instant as you behold the surreal reality of the moment — you are staring at an airborne white sturgeon. But the fish falls and the water settles. Life on Earth goes on as normal. But now you know. Swimmin’ in the murk of the bay, there be monsters.
