Nostalgia and gossip thrive best in coffee shops where one can sit out the morning in a comfy old Naugahyde booth while drinking an endless cup of joe and enjoying a hearty plate of bacon and eggs. Wise locals know this and have been coming to Dave’s for years to exchange anecdotes and memories. Sometimes it seems as if everyone here has known each other for years and years and in some cases this is true, but the old-timers won’t make you feel bad if this is your first time. And even though Dave’s doesn’t make the best breakfasts in the world, they’re certainly greasy and comforting like nobody’s business. Nor will the coffee give Peet’s a run for its money, but it’s hot and plentiful. The discussion du jour might be about “that bastard Jerry Brown,” Oakland Kaiser (i.e., is it the best or worst hospital ever?), the no-good boss, the sorry state of the world, and the all-time favorite: The Way Things Used to Be. Although Dave’s used to be open 24 hours, it’s now only open till 3 p.m. But that’s still plenty of time to learn a thing or two about how things used to be, with a side order of toast.
