.Best Place to Reach a Higher Plane: One lofty patch of green

Bill Osborne Model Airplane Field

The mound of land on the Bay Farm side of the Alameda/Bay Farm bridge is dubbed “Mount Trashmore” by the locals, as it once served as a landfill for the city. Today a path winds around its base, allowing you to see native flowers and jackrabbits that populate the once-desolate hill near the old Oakland Airport. This place where flight pioneers once landed and departed is where Osborne, a former aeronautics mechanic at Alameda Naval Air Station, decided to open a model airplane field in 1947. One of the oldest in the country, it is now run by the Alameda Recreation and Parks Department. On any sunny day, you might find small model planes buzzing above your head and the grassy green of Mount Trashmore just across the way. It’s free to fly there, but you’re supposed to have liability insurance. Free flight lessons by appointment 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sundays, weather permitting.
