Unless you’ve gone to the wrong school or gotten hooked up with the wrong church, you’ve probably accepted this newfangled idea of “evolution.” There’s no better place in the East Bay to observe it in action that at the East Bay Vivarium. This reptile, amphibian, insect, and arachnid store is packed with windows into our Precambrian past. You can track the movements of various adaptations through dozens of species of monitor lizards, tree frogs, and tortoises. Each is uniquely adapted to its environment. Take the spurred African tortoise, which has evolved large spikes on the undercarriage of the front of its shell, allowing it to joust with other males. If you’re after a truly devolved experience, it’s hard to beat this mecca of lizardly activities. And unlike the zoo, here you can arrange to take one of the creatures home with you.
