GSIs do more than half the teaching at UC Berkeley. But that’s not to say they have half the office space. After all, everyone knows that teaching undergrads isn’t actually the business of the university; it’s just an annoying side effect of getting all that state funding. Fortunately, a host of businesses near campus offer table space to GSIs for the price of a coffee. Mediterraneum is just far enough away from campus that it’s never crowded, but not so far as to be an undue hardship for those who wear high-heeled clogs. The cafe is quite large, and while the coffee’s not the best, it’s definitely drinkable. (Though for those GSIs who’ve actually had enough sleep the night before, the big, cheap glasses of fresh-squeezed orange juice are probably a better choice.) The staff is mellow and, best of all, the place is a favorite of that woman seen frequently about town wearing her awesome “Brad Pitt 666” hard hat.
