.Best Place to Do It in the Road A bike ride to romance

Morgan Territory Rd., Clayton to Livermore

All that samba dancing might just put you in the mood for a sexy sojourn. Pedaling onto Morgan Territory Road in Clayton is a ride to a time before Sudden Oak Death, and before McMansions — to when “do it in the road” meant more than speeding to the next red light. Cruising the contoured asphalt, you immediately start climbing stream valleys up the deserted backside of Mount Diablo. Getting to the summit — which, at almost 2,000 feet, is one of the higher patches of pavement in the East Bay — can be a slow, hot grind. But on the way, you’ll want more than water; you’ll want a date. Morgan Territory is the East Bay’s last long one-lane road. You can pull over for a romantic picnic under the close canopy of oaks. And go ahead — do whatever comes naturally. For several twisting, narrow miles, no one on four wheels dares to speed, which means you’ll have plenty of time to hear someone coming and button up.
