.Best Place for a Thirtysomething to Get Injured

Bladium Sports Club

It’s not the place that’s dangerous. It’s you. When skating full tilt, hoping to beat that huge defenseman to a puck in the corner, it’s easy to forget you’re no longer a kid, and despite your pads and helmet you may be paying for your hubris tomorrow morning. But hey, that’s inline hockey — the focal point of Bladium Sports Club, which relocated in 2000 from San Francisco to huge new digs in a hangar at the decommissioned Alameda Naval Air Station (now Alameda Point). Since the move, Bladium adult hockey has really caught on. The club has two full rinks and several dozen teams ranging from beginner (copper) to basically college-level (elite). It also boasts an indoor soccer field, fitness gym, workout classes, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, and a large pro shop. (A climbing wall is slated for completion later this year.) Unlike the fancy gyms in downtown Oakland and Berkeley, Bladium is kid-friendly. There a children’s play area where a club staffer will watch members’ tots for two hours (free!) while you work out or perhaps pummel some other kid’s mom or dad on the plastic ice. And finally, let’s not forget the upstairs sports bar. This is, after all, a Canadian sport.
