Tilden Steam Train

Who’s not a sucker for trains? Kids are seemingly born loving ’em, and adults get a warm, fuzzy feeling just thinking about them. The little local iron horse that stands engine and caboose ahead of all others in the East Bay is the scaled-down steam train that chugs through a lovely ridge in Tilden Regional Park. It spurts plumes of heady steam and whistles loud and merrily as it clickety-clacks tots, moms, dads, grandparents, and pooches along the bumpy tracks that circle by a water tower, pass through a tunnel, and cross a bridge. The $2 trip takes twelve minutes, departing every twenty minutes or so when the line is operating. Friendly stripe-capped engineers crew this Redwood Valley Railway route that’s been running since 1952. Those adults whose knees now poke above the sides of the cars they must scrunch into were once the wide-eyed fun-loving kids whose hands they’re holding. They can close their eyes and for a moment be carried on an old-timey adventure back to childhood.
