The goal is to create a 130-yard mural along a wall of Lakeview Elementary School, located diagonally across from the Grand Lake Theatre. Led by local artist Peter Lee, known as Artist by the Lake, the project illustrates the global connection of Lake Merritt with a panoramic view of the whole world as represented by natural and manmade landmarks and cultural icons from around the globe. The public is invited to participate in this shining utopian vision of tolerance and mutual understanding, making this a true community mural. On any given day of the week, good folks can be seen holding paintbrushes and tolerating auto exhaust to let the kiddies know that all hope is not lost. The project is need of financial support for artists and materials: Contact Stephen Tompkins at 805-405-9474.
