.Best Lunchtime Yoga Fix: A grounding 75-minute break from the rat race

Chris Hoskins' class

There are some activities in life that we regret afterward. Never yoga. In West Berkeley on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Chris Hoskins leads a class from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. that provides a mini-vacation in the middle of the harried workday (prices: $14 drop-in; $60 for five-class card). He teaches Hatha yoga in the Krishnamacharya tradition, or, as class members describe it, “yoga without the attitude” and “gritty, no-hippie-bullshit, funky, hip-hop yoga.” It’s not an exercise class — the emphasis is on the full body and spirit connection and relaxation. Classes are small, averaging about four people of varied skill levels, so personal attention and hands-on correction during the poses is the norm. Hoskins’ background as a ballet dancer and his work with movement studies means he understands deeply how the body works, inside and out. His creative approach makes every class different, and familiar poses are presented in new ways. Plus he lets you laugh! Hoskins also leads classes at Yoga 6 (StudioYoga6.com), his private studio in West Berkeley.
