.Best Local Farm: Come and reap what you sow

City Slicker Farms

Farms? In Oakland? City Slicker runs six community farms in the city. Started by Oakland residents in 2001, its pricing system works on a sliding scale, work-trade, and donations so that no one is denied access to fresh produce. A unique volunteer-run grassroots organization, City Slicker played an integral part in the birth of the Mandela Farmers’ Market, open Saturdays at Fifth Street and Mandela Parkway since 2003. Its outreach programs include helping residents learn to garden, teaching kids about the importance of local, fresh produce, and working with the People’s Grocery, an Oakland organization that offers fresh, local, organically grown produce to low-income residents. City Slicker has recently completed construction on five new chicken coops to add fresh eggs to the offerings.
