.Best (Legal) Skate Hangout: A place for half-pipe dreams

Clean Skateboarding and Apparel

As Vans make a comeback with thrashers and stunnas alike, skate culture is becoming the domain of both hip-hop heads and punksters. Clean is the current destination for an entire generation of kids from East Oakland to North Berkeley who grew up pushing wood. While the bay has a huge skateboarding scene, finding legal concrete to wreck can be tough. Ben Winslow and Paul Dioguardi opened Clean with that in mind. They provide a half-pipe in the back of the shop for customers to test their wares and moves in a safe environment. Like, every store should have a half-pipe. Filled with boards, wheels, trucks, and local skate fashion, this little spot on Franklin Street in downtown Oakland serves as a hangout and incubator for street talent. Once a month Clean sponsors a local artist and with Comet Skateboards, the store also sponsors the Hood Games, a day of music, art, fashion, and skate that brings together all of the bay’s subterranean cultures. Clean offers more than recreation; this skateboarding site has the potential to become a vocation.
