Experts say you can’t judge karaoke in a vacuum. There’s the question of ambience, cost of admission, lighting, entertainment value, and the number of hecklers in the crowd … oh yeah, and the quality of the singing. While word around town has it that the Serenader beats all other East Bay clubs for sheer funny-funny-ha-ha entertainment (one karaoke gadfly claims to have seen a toothless octogenarian sing whatever the hell occurred to her without paying the slightest bit of attention to the backing track), this year’s best all-around karaoke night happens every Tuesday at the Willie Mays Skybox Lounge. Hosted by the lovely, charming, and unassuming DJ Diva D and her partner DJ Oras, this event takes place in a swank lounge with huge video screens and a capacious stage. While such digs may seem a little large for the average karaoke crowd, they afford plenty of couch space. Most singers who come here can really take a track and wreck it (that’s a good thing), so you don’t have to worry about sitting through a torturous American Idol-style amateur showcase. But not-so-great singers can give it a shot, too, and nobody will hate them for it.
