.Best Hike

Morgan Territory

The scenic one-lane road that winds up Livermore’s rolling hills to Morgan Territory makes this park a hiker’s paradise even before you set foot on the trail. The best time to hike is in spring, where the park’s 4,147 acres bloom with more than ninety kinds of wildflowers. Begin your hike on the Volvon trail, where you’ll descend into a shady, wooded valley rife with oak trees, flowers, and small critters. You’ll emerge into the foothills, where undulating grass contrasts starkly with blue, blue skies. You’ll see Diablo sunflowers, the occasional deer, and raptors gliding overhead. Those who want a longer hike can continue up the hill on the Blue Oak Trail, whose heights offer dazzling views of Mt. Diablo. Shortly thereafter, you’ll find the Volvon trail again, which meets up with the Bob Walker Regional Trail. The tree-lined Coyote trail winds up and down through hillsides, boulders, and a sun-dappled meadow, where you’ll once again hear the sounds of people reminding you that this solitary park is only forty miles from downtown Oakland. The main loop is about five miles long, and if you disdain extreme heat, avoid hiking in the summer.
