.Best High School Team: Spreading lofty aspirations

Alameda Community Learning Center Ultimate Frisbee

Granted, flying Frisbees aren’t what first come to mind when contemplating the best high school team in the Bay Area, but being best is exactly what ACLC Ultimate Frisbee teams are about. Dark Meat, the coed varsity team, has won the state championship for the last two years and the third spot in the 2006 Western championships. In 2003, coach Mike De Sousa wanted to bring an all-inclusive sport to the Alameda Community Learning Center, a charter middle and high school that’s more oriented to academics than athletics. He settled on Ultimate, a soccerlike noncontact sport using a flying disc instead of a ball. Since then, disk fever has engulfed serious high-school athletes as well as kids who normally wouldn’t go out for school sports. Other teams include Sweet Meat (girls), Junior Meat (middle school), Raw Meat (junior varsity), and Fresh Meat, the new freshman team starting up fall 2007. The varsity squad is gearing up for the 2007 UPA Western Championships May 12-13 in Burlington, Washington. Catch ’em practicing year-round at Alameda’s Crab Cove on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons.
