Put simply: Tilden is the East Bay’s cathedral of golf. With its gorgeous fairways, lined by tall pines and redwoods, and its sweeping views of San Francisco Bay, the venerable par-seventy is one of the most breathtaking golf courses anywhere. And it’s difficult. The narrow fairways require precision off the tee, and the hilly layout can result in blind shots at the flag. Plus, at what other golf course are you as likely to spot wildlife dancing out from the trees as watch your ball sail into the woods? We know the 73-year-old course has its detractors, those who complain it has a cramped and quirky layout, but from our perspective, it’s rustic and beautiful. It’s also a workout. If you decide to hoof it and not pay extra for a motorized cart, it’s well worth the savings. Playing eighteen holes becomes more like a walk in the wilderness than a round of golf. Plus, Tilden remains inexpensive, compared to the skyrocketing fees elsewhere. Prices range from $18 to $57.
