.Best Fried Chicken

Casa Orinda

Local lore has it that the owners of this restaurant made off with Colonel Sanders’ recipe years ago. That may be no more than a legend, but if you’re hankering for some crispy chicken and wouldn’t be caught dead sneaking into a fast food joint, this is your spot. Its portions are generous: The chicken comes smothered in creamy gravy, and ice cream sundaes are drowned in chocolate sauce. The place has been open since 1932, but the original building is long gone, as is the crossroads where it once sat — now it’s the freeway that borders the restaurant. Casa Orinda still manages to retain its old cowboy feel (a Montana cowboy opened the original restaurant). Check out the antique gun collection, the oil paintings of covered wagons, and the moose head above the bar. It’s open only for dinner, but Casa has a very loyal following. Not surprising, since this place is the one that really does chicken right.
