.Best Environmental Resource Center: Helpful how-tos for going green

The Ecology Center

If the Bay Area’s environmental community were a body, Berkeley’s Ecology Center would be its brain, disseminating massive quantities of information and helpful instructions throughout the system. The center organizes a truly encyclopedic variety of workshops, lectures, films, discussion groups, and volunteer opportunities — often several events a day — on everything from biofuels to wetlands restoration to solar power. (Check out the EcoCalendar on its Web site for a full rundown.) It also runs an information desk, a lending library stocked with books about environmental issues, and a store where you can find environment-friendly gifts like recycled-paper stationery, cleverly crafted reusable shopping bags, and natural soaps and candles. You don’t even have to burn fossil fuels by driving to the center to benefit from this information goldmine — its Web site provides dozens of useful fact sheets as well as an EcoDirectory with a comprehensive list of green-minded local stores and service providers. You can also subscribe to its quarterly magazine, Terrain, which takes a compelling look at Northern California’s biggest environmental issues and features frequent Q&As with local experts.
